Welcome to Mystery Monday…
Just what is Mystery Monday? It’s whatever might be in my bag of tricks for the day. Could be a book recommendation or a review. Might be an excerpt from a story or even a piece of prose. One never knows what I might target.
Let’s spin the proverbial dial and see what shakes out…
How about a story excerpt from a rough draft?
“The Darker Side of Love”
“Why am I here?” Thea asked, her eyes darting around the dark room.
“To satisfy me,” the voice boomed.
The young woman lay on some sort of hard, cold surface. She tried to move her arms but they wouldn’t budge. Leather restraints held them tight. She attempted to raise her foot and found similar restraints there as well.
Her head ached. She searched her memory for clues.
There was a party.
It was the first big shindig of the year for her sorority, Alpha Psi. Her sisters helped Thea pick the perfect dress—bright blue with skinny straps—and a pair of gold strappy shoes. She piled her dark hair on top of her head in a messy bun. Her make-up was meticulously applied. She looked… perfect.
At the party, Thea was a regular social butterfly flitting from one corner to the next while flirting with all the members of Sigma Alpha, their fraternity brothers on campus. It was a great party and everyone was having a good time. And then, he walked in.
Thea froze on the spot when their eyes met. Zack was her ex-boyfriend. Someone she hoped to never run into again. Their break up was messy and his twisted antics were the talk of the campus.
His harsh eyes were the last thing Thea remembered.
And now she was here, wherever here was. Thea inhaled. Zack’s musky scent tickled her nose.
“Zack? Someone’s going to figure out it’s you.”
“No one will ever know. People saw you leave the party with someone else. I left early, remember?”
“I don’t…” Her words trailed off as something rough brushed her cheek. Thea’s eyes darted to the left. Zack’s stubbled face was next to hers, his eyes wild. “Why are you doing this?”
“I told you before. You’re mine. There’s no such thing as breaking up with me.”
Thea started to protest, but then she remembered how Zack enjoyed playing games. Maybe that’s what this was and not the nefarious scheme of a psychotic. She’d let him think he won. She could plot her escape afterward.
“What do you want from me?”
“I want to play.”
